COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Reno will host a free tennis and pickleball event for all ages on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Reno Tennis Center (2601 Plumas St) following recent court upgrades.  2NEWS
  • The City of Reno is raising funds to rebuild the Sierra Vista Park shelter that was destroyed by arson after November 2024. A $125,000 pledge from the Greg Nelson Trust and Warren Nelson Family has moved the project forward, and officials continue to seek community support.  2NEWS
  • At Gentiva Hospice, two long-time volunteers ease pain and lift spirits by incorporating music and Reiki in their visits to patients nearing life's end. Their caring efforts remind the community of the importance of support as each forms deep personal connections during challenging times + offers hope.  KUNR
  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada's Elevating Families program earned global certification from Economic Mobility Pathways, validating its coaching model that helps parents build stability and manage finances in Reno—145 participants have already benefited since its launch in late 2023.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on Ormsby Lane displaced three adults, one child, and two dogs in Washoe Valley on Monday afternoon after Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue put out the flames shortly after 1 p.m., with no injuries reported and the cause under investigation.  KRNV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumer Reports found that some Nevada grocery stores offer prices lower than Walmart while others charge much more. Shoppers may benefit from comparing prices to find the best deals.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local media professionals received specialized training for wildfire coverage on Apr. 6. The session addressed the unique challenges wildfires pose to news reporting and aimed to improve future on-the-ground coverage.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Prescribed burns are underway in Dog Valley; no road or trail closures are planned, and drivers are asked to slow down & watch for firefighters.  2NEWS
  • Today, the Forest Service will begin prescribed burns in Dog Valley, planning to treat up to 600 acres with burns starting around 9 a.m. each day for two weeks; smoke will be visible, and drivers are advised to slow down & drones are banned.  2NEWS
