Good morning, Reno. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • A driver named Johna Young struck a Washoe County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle on March 31 at 11:30 p.m. while driving the wrong way and ignoring stop signals, and she was arrested for DUI—medical personnel evaluated her before deputies booked her at the county detention facility.  KRNV
  • Officers responded to a shooting at 8:30 a.m. on April 3 near downtown Reno where a man was shot and is in critical condition + authorities said the suspect remains at-large with no current threat to the public.  KRNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At UNR, one in three undergraduates reported food insecurity in the past six months and many turned to the Pack Provisions food pantry for free meals—its 250 weekly visits and donor support aim to meet growing needs amid rising food costs. The pantry uses donations to help provide more than 2,000 meals when a boost of $5,000 is reached.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is asking Reno residents to volunteer for its annual Great Community Cleanup on May 3 from 8 a.m. to noon — over 30 sites in Truckee Meadows will have litter picked up, invasive weeds removed, and illegal dumpsites cleaned. Vehicle owners with trucks or trailers are especially needed — a grant from the Truckee River Fund supports the cleanup effort.  KRNV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washoe County launched an interactive online tool (Washoe County Checkbook) that lets residents view details of county revenue, spending and payroll data from 24 departments. The data is updated nightly to compare budgeted amounts with actual expenditures.  KRNV
  • StoneGate developer Heinz Ranch LLC proposed to change a 5,000-home project into a plan with 1,350 homes and increased industrial space, but the Reno Planning Commission rejected the proposal due to local compatibility worries—the City Council will review the matter later this year.  KRNV
  • Nevada lawmakers are considering Assembly Bill 388 which would require private employers with over 50 workers and all public employers to offer up to 12 weeks of fully paid leave after 90 days of employment for family or medical needs — a change that could benefit nearly 1 million workers but faces strong opposition from business groups. The proposal would extend similar benefits already given to state employees and is under active review by the Assembly Committee on Revenue.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Several law enforcement agencies took part in the 9th annual Symposium on Community and Policing in Reno on April 2 (the event aimed to improve ties between police and the community). Local officials and experts discussed ways to work together more closely (hoping to strengthen local safety measures).  2NEWS
