ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Reno firefighters responded at 7:30 p.m. at 1910 Lassen Drive to quickly extinguish a fire that officials said may have started in the chimney—31 personnel were involved and no one was injured or displaced.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 28, deputies from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office stopped a speeding vehicle on Highway 50 near Winter Parkway in Mound House and arrested Dayton resident Jimmy Keith II after their K9 alerted to over 5 ounces of methamphetamine in his vehicle — he now faces charges for possession with intent to sell and traffic violations.  KRNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers are discussing Assembly Bill 533 which would let students attend any public school they choose without school zones—this plan aims to match students with schools that meet their needs. Lawmakers will gather enrollment data to address issues like transportation and classroom capacity before moving forward.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trails at Spooner Lake State Park were closed on March 31st for repair work on the Marlette Dam and will remain off limits until 2026 — the lake has been drained and closed to visitors. Authorities warn that visitors must avoid construction zones — emergency teams retain full access during the project.  2NEWS
  • Wild horses were held in large corrals at the National Wild Horse and Burro Center in Palomino Valley near Reno on Feb. 19—photos captured the animals en masse at the center.  Reno Gazette Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada Division of State Parks announced that trails in Spooner Lake State Park’s backcountry were closed on March 31 for repairs on the Marlette Dam that will continue through 2026—Marlette Lake is drained and closed while the Tahoe Rim Trail and Capital to Tahoe Trail remain open for visitors. Emergency personnel have access throughout the construction zones.  KRNV
  • The USCIS permanently terminated a $300,000 grant for the Asian Community Development Council on March 27+which was set to fund citizenship classes for over 200 lawful permanent residents in Reno and Las Vegas. The nonprofit said the funding cut forced staff reductions+may end vital services for immigrants.  Reno Gazette Journal
