CRIME NEWS

  • A man was convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman picked up along Fourth Street in 2021, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office said—George Claros, 33 faced multiple counts and will be sentenced on June 9 before Judge Scott N. Freeman.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Carson Tahoe Health System agreed to pay $8.9 million to settle allegations of misusing PPP funds after a DOJ investigation triggered by a whistleblower revealed its affiliated entities exceeded the program's small-business size limits—though the system said it used the funds in good faith to support patients and staff.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Michael Comish was arrested after he allegedly threatened his neighbor with an axe during a standoff in Cold Springs and was treated for minor injuries—he will be booked on multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon as officers ended the incident.  2NEWS

  • Makayla Hardy spoke to an expert about a mysterious fireball seen over Reno last night. A high wind watch is in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday evening—gusts up to 65 mph may move unsecured items and cause power outages, so residents are urged to secure outdoor belongings.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The East Fork Fire Protection District and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District reached a boundary drop agreement—active since March 20—that lets the closest emergency units respond across Carson Valley, Topaz Regions, and parts of the Tahoe Basin while each district keeps its own structure.  2NEWS
  • After magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg—editor-in-chief of The Atlantic—reported receiving classified war plans on Signal on March 21, Nevada lawmakers criticized the use of an unclassified messaging app to discuss planned military strikes targeting Houthis in Yemen. Sen. Jacky Rosen said congressional hearings must be held soon to hold those responsible accountable.  KRNV
  • On Tuesday, March 25th, Governor Joe Lombardo introduced his first legislative bill of the session to establish a Nevada Attainable Housing Council that will manage a dedicated $200 million housing account and add a fourth income tier for housing eligibility— the proposal now sits with the Assembly Commerce and Labor committee for review.  2NEWS

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Reno-Sparks apartment market stabilized in late 2024 as vacancy rates rose to 3.16%—the highest since fall 2022—and new complexes offered up to 8 weeks free rent to draw tenants. Experts noted rental prices declined slightly and complexes took longer to reach 90% occupancy, suggesting landlords will likely keep rents steady as leases renew.  KRNV
