CRIME NEWS

  • An off-duty operator with the Reno Fire Department, Shawn C. Price, was arrested on DUI and lane maintenance charges after crashing into a brick wall on March 17 in northwest Reno—he was briefly hospitalized and booked into Washoe County jail before his release.  KRNV
  • Reno fire department recovered a body today near the water’s edge of Truckee River on Riverside Drive—firefighters reached the scene via a nearby walking path as Reno Police began investigating with the Washoe County Medical Examiner set to determine the cause of death.  KRNV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Waste Management announced that it will raise Reno trash collection rates by 6% starting April 1 — residential customers using 96 gallon containers will pay $1.37 more per month and $4.11 more per quarter — citing rising gas prices, employee pay and environmental fees.  KRNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers are proposing Assembly Bill 398 to address teacher shortages and hard-to-fill positions by offering extra pay to teachers in needed classrooms — an effort to ensure every class has qualified educators. Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro said the bill, which will raise school standards, will be heard next Friday afternoon — setting the stage for further discussions on classroom improvements.  2NEWS

  • Reno and the Reno Fire Department will host an emergency preparedness open house on April 5 at Damonte Ranch High School in Ward 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will show residents how to plan evacuations, build a go-bag, create defensible space, and prepare for power outages — with a kids area for fire awareness activities.  KRNV
  • A veterans town hall will be held Thursday at the Reno Town Mall to offer local veterans a forum for discussion.  2NEWS
  • Waste Management will increase rates for Reno residents starting April 1 by 4.4% so that homes with a 96 gallon trash cart and a 96 gallon recycle cart will pay $25.20 instead of $24.13 a month. The city voted last year to end its contract with Waste Management—an agreement that will last until November 7, 2029.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Gov. Lombardo and Rep. Amodei toured a workforce housing project in Winnemucca Tuesday that will house workers at the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine — which started construction after Lithium Americas and General Motors finalized an agreement late last year — marking a key step in the mine’s development.  KRNV

  • Reno residents may face seasonal allergies as March 20th arrives, with trees—especially juniper, elm, and cottonwood—triggering symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, and congestion.
