COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Animal lovers in Reno can support pets in need at Tails and Ales on Friday, March 20 at Abby’s Highway 40 (424 E Fourth St) beginning at 5:30 p.m., where specialty drinks, local food, and a raffle benefit the SPCA of Northern Nevada.  2NEWS
  • Reno's City recently wrapped up nearly three-quarter-mile sidewalk improvements along Plumas Street—extending north and south from the Reno Tennis Center—to boost pedestrian safety and connectivity. Local leaders and residents praised the project for preserving trees while increasing foot traffic.  2NEWS
  • A nonviolent No Kings rally is set for March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon downtown, with a march starting at Flint and Liberty streets (near Arlington Avenue) and ending at City Plaza.   • Scientists warn that record warmth this week may shrink the Sierra snowpack and cause it to melt out near Donner Pass five weeks early. Reno’s National Weather Service forecasts highs in the 80s in valleys and 70s to low 80s in Sierra communities, with dry, mild weather through the weekend.  KRNV
  • Reno’s widely planted Bradford pear trees are blooming again this spring, and city officials report that 2,137 are managed and a no-new tree policy is in place to curb the odor many find off-putting — privately owned trees may persist for years.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • NV Energy announced that repairs on Moana Lane's eastbound lane (between Baker Lane and South Virginia) began Monday, Mar. 16, with work expected to finish after Apr. 6. Motorists should choose an alternate route to avoid delays.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Washoe County Juvenile Services warns families in the juvenile justice system about fake text messages that claim to be from its Traffic Division and the DMV demanding payment for traffic fines. Residents should avoid clicking links and contact the agency for verification.  KRNV
  • Washoe County's Homeless Advisory Board voted unanimously on Monday to remain active and not disband. Board member Michael Clark noted no current member has experienced homelessness—adding members with this experience might help address key issues.  2NEWS
  • Washoe County Superintendent Joe Ernst announced he will retire in July, leaving two years into his four-year contract and working until his final day on July 8. His departure comes under a no-cost exit clause that requires 90 days’ notice.  Reno Gazette Journal
