COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RTC is hosting open houses to collect community feedback on a study for a new connector to ease heavy I-80 traffic between TRI and Fernley. Project manager Bryan Byrne noted the study now faces a funding gap — $275 million to $451 million is still needed.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A water main break closed a section of USA Parkway at Innovation Way in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, blocking travel between I-80 and Highway 50. Storey County officials said repairs could be long-term and urged drivers to plan alternate routes.  Reno Gazette Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in northern Nevada have risen nearly 40 cents this week + drivers report higher costs at the pump. Experts note similar trends nationwide and say prices may increase further.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Washoe County School District voted on its budget measures to plan funding for the next school year. It unanimously approved motions to continue early learning assistant funding for fiscal 2027 — and to direct a study of consolidation savings for high-needs schools, with proposals revisited in the fiscal 2028 process.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A two-year study by The Heartland Institute found Reno-Tahoe International Airport’s official weather station recorded warmer temperatures than a reference station 1.1 miles away — likely because nearby pavements retain heat overnight — during 2024 and 2025, while NOAA has not yet commented.  KRNV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada approved a plan to restrict candy and sugary drink purchases with SNAP benefits starting Feb. 2, 2028 after DMV data showed 61 percent are overweight - a measure to encourage healthier choices amid Medicaid cuts. The two-year program is estimated to cost $3 million.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • A Mental Health America report showed Nevada ranked 51st in mental health care in 2025 with many youth and adults not receiving needed help, and officials warn federal insurance changes may further limit access to treatment.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Reno’s Pennington mansion, a 19,500-square-foot estate at 2490 Manzanita Lane, is back on the market with an asking price of $13.95 million. It sold for about $10.3 million in 2023 and now reflects a 35% increase over its previous sale price.  Reno Gazette Journal
