- ➤ Reno residents are voting on festival ideas in a public poll that favors the Festival of Hands and Grilled Cheese Festival while a new proposal called the Redneck Games would include fun contests and cook-offs with special comedian appearances near the end of May. Reno Gazette Journal
- ➤ Relay for Life organizers plan to hold the fundraiser on July 17 if the new date is approved. Additional event details, including schedule and location, will follow (approval pending). 2NEWS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Nevada Reno President Brian Sandoval presented funding priorities for fiscal years 2027 through 2029 to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents on Mar. 6. The presentation set key plans for future budgeting within the state system. 2NEWS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists from around the world gathered at Tahoe City Marina to begin a three-day conservation workshop on Lake Tahoe, where they will share data on giant trout species (including the Lahontan cutthroat trout) and plan measures to protect these fish from habitat loss. KUNR
- ➤ Recent rain and snow have added 16 billion gallons of water to Lake Tahoe since Feb. 15, with only 35 percent falling on the lake—which covers 190 square miles—while most landed on its surrounding watershed spanning 310 square miles. Local agencies and homeowners are working on stormwater management to slow runoff and filter pollutants. 2NEWS
- ➤ NRCS conducted a snow survey on Mar. 2 at Mt. Rose (a SNOTEL site) that found below-average snowpack in the Sierra Nevada region. Hydrologists say the low readings may lead to a longer snow-free season and reduced water for farmers (a follow-up survey is planned for April). KUNR
