COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada is expanding the St. Vincent's Thrift Store on E. Fourth Street in downtown Reno — adding 2,500 sqft and new cashier stations to better serve shoppers and people in need.  2NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Experts predict that gas prices will rise today in northern Nevada as the war in Iran affects fuel supply (Jaden Urban reports). Reno drivers may soon see higher costs at pumps.  2NEWS
  • Businesses are adjusting to a penny shortage after the U.S. Mint stopped producing the coin last November due to high production costs and low purchasing power. Local retailers are rounding cash transactions (with some stores asking for targeted penny donations) as experts recommend clearer rounding laws.  KUNR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District held a community meeting at Pine Middle School on Mar 4 to share updates about the school’s future plans. Parents received details on upcoming improvements + had a chance to ask questions.  2NEWS
  • Governor Lombardo and the state superintendent read to elementary students in Las Vegas yesterday during Nevada's Reading Week celebration and then traveled north to continue the event.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Homeowners in Nevada are urged to check for leaks during Fix a Leak Week, March 16-22, as part of the EPA WaterSense Program that the Public Utilities Commission supports. Timely repairs to faucets, toilets, and other fixtures can reduce water bills by about 10 percent.  2NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hannah Schultz, a second-year med student at UNR, volunteered during an ultrasound lab and discovered a rare kidney condition when a routine scan showed abnormal fluid buildup. She later underwent reconstructive surgery and said the experience shifted her focus toward urology.  2NEWS

  • Nevada Skiing will send five student-athletes to next week's championships at Utah Olympic Park in Park City. The team, including Erica Lynch, Sophia Falter, Pietro Bisello, David Morken & Peyton Wells, will compete for the pack in the national event.  2NEWS
