COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Washoe Tribe completed the purchase of a 10,274-acre preserve northeast of Lake Tahoe using a $5.5 million grant plus private donations. The new WélmeltiɁ Preserve will serve for long-term conservation and cultural restoration for the tribe.  2NEWS
  • RGJ readers narrowed down Costco and WinCo to the final two in a grocery bracket contest. Locals will vote until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17 & decide which store is the favorite.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • In January, Reno death doulas hosted events at Radical Cat bookstore and Wholistic Wellness Center to help residents talk openly about grief and plan for end-of-life care. The sessions provided a safe space for personal reflections + supportive community dialogue.  KUNR
  • The City of Reno will accept applications for the Love Your Block Community Grant Program to support improvement projects in Ward 1; applications open tomorrow through March 31, and staff will host open office hours (Feb. 17, Feb. 25, March 2 and March 12) to assist applicants.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students planning to enroll at Western Nevada College for 2026-27 can now apply for aid as the updated FAFSA opens today. Staff said applicants should have an FSA ID (and parent email) and tax details from 2024 to complete the form in about 30 minutes.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) revealed its water resource plan covering through 2045 and said the local supply will remain sufficient for the next 20 years.  2NEWS
  • Reno City Council approved the final 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan during its Feb. 11 meeting, setting a five-year framework to reduce wildfire risks (including hazardous vegetation reduction, evacuation improvements, and funding eligibility) while strengthening local and regional coordination.  KRNV
  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue received a $39,120 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to buy new firefighting boots—replacing old gear that did not meet NFPA standards and boosting response across unincorporated Washoe County.  2NEWS
  • Lithia Hyundai of Reno donated essential equipment + care supplies to the Mounted Horse Unit, benefiting horses Max and Goliath who assist deputies with community outreach and search operations. Deputies met the donors in person at the Sheriff's Office.  2NEWS

  • A Reno teen with Hurler syndrome traveled over 2,400+ miles to Paterson to receive an arm port implant by nurse Matthew Ostroff at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, letting her safely get her life-saving infusions and return home after a half-hour procedure.  Reno Gazette Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Reno is moving to add more affordable housing with five projects underway or in planning. The developments include 51-unit Line Drive Apartments (completing in spring) and other sites designed for veterans, seniors and low-income households around the city.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Washoe Tribe made the largest land return purchase in the Sierra Nevada region on Feb. 11, marking the third largest such acquisition in California. The tribe plans to use the property to support cultural heritage and community development in future programs.  2NEWS
