COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Reno Fire Department is hosting National Burn Awareness Week events to promote fire safety, while Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District reminds residents to prepare for the upcoming fire season — joint efforts to keep the community safe.  2NEWS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Save Mart on Keystone Avenue in Reno will close at the end of the day February 27 — shoppers are advised to finish their visits before then. The store will cease operations on that date.  2NEWS
  • Boomer’s Sportsbook, Nevada’s only independent sportsbook operator, will open its first Reno location at Bonanza Casino on Feb. 13. The venue will offer in-person bets, mobile app registration, and a deposit match promotion (up to $250) for new users.  KRNV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reno residents discussed what qualifies someone as a local, noting that being born here, living through housing booms+ wild winters or wildfires may count as earning that status. The conversation highlights the community’s evolving view of local identity today.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School Police responded to a lockdown at Spanish Springs High School after an alarm (triggered by mistake) prompted emergency measures. The school district reported the error on Feb. 5.  2NEWS

  • RTC & NDOT have released an EA for the Lemmon Drive Traffic Improvements & Resiliency Project that will realign and elevate the roadway between Fleetwood Drive & Ramsey Way. Community members may review details online through March 9 and attend a hearing on February 19 at Lemmon Valley Elementary School.  KRNV
  • Washoe County and the Nevada Division of Insurance will host a forum on Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Washoe County Administration Complex to explain new wildfire risk homeowners insurance laws and discuss local wildfire preparedness—homeowners may join in person or via Zoom.  KRNV
  • Reno fire chiefs warned that less than one inch of winter snow — 0.9 inches so far versus a usual 5.9 inches — has raised early fire risk amid warm, dry conditions, prompting residents to clear defensible space with permits available through April.  Reno Gazette Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Governor Lombardo announced over $64 million in state funding to expand attainable housing in Northern Nevada, including Reno projects like the Hi-Way 40 rental development and Alpine Vista for working families. Additional initiatives include a $750,000 homebuyer assistance program and projects in Fernley and surrounding areas.  KRNV
  • Grand Sierra Resort filed a construction permit for a new three-story, 90-bay driving range facility with food and beverage options at its lakefront property, planned to open early 2027 as part of its overall redevelopment plans — set to upgrade the current popular Grand Bay Driving Range.  KRNV
