  • On Nov. 1, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada opened three extra mobile distribution sites at its warehouse on Oddie Boulevard in Reno, serving over 500 families amid a surge in holiday demand after a SNAP cutoff; it now warns that future cuts could leave more local families vulnerable.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Reno is hosting multiple community events this week, including Nevada men's basketball at Lawlor Events Center Tuesday night, Monster Jam at the Livestock Events Center from Jan. 9 to 11, and the Reno Latin Dance Fest at Silver Legacy.   • A Valero refinery in California will close in April, following the Los Angeles-area unit that shut last October, and experts warn fuel prices may rise here. State and industry leaders are meeting to recommend short-term fixes and plan infrastructure improvements + boost fuel resiliency.  2NEWS

  • Liberty Utilities has partnered with ALERTWildfire (based at the University of Nevada, Reno) to expand and maintain wildfire camera coverage around Lake Tahoe so emergency responders can detect fires more quickly during peak season.  KRNV
  • Liberty Utilities has partnered with ALERTWildfire to sponsor fire cameras in Tahoe that use AI to alert responders of smoke plumes. The live feeds are accessible to local residents and emergency teams on ALERTWest, ALERTWildfire and the Watch Duty app.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on Sparks Blvd. experienced delays after lane closures began Monday, Jan. 5 for a widening project that includes detours via Fargo Way and Baring Boulevard; officials said the work — which also involves relocating overhead power lines — is expected to finish in mid-2027 with an $86 million investment.  2NEWS
  • Drivers on Sparks Boulevard face delays from lane closures due to a roadway widening project that began Monday, Jan. 5 between Springland, O’Callaghan and Baring Boulevard. Officials said detours are in place and the project will finish in mid-2027.  2NEWS
  • Lane closures began on Sparks Boulevard Monday, Jan. 5, as the widening project closed northbound and southbound lanes from Springland Drive to Baring Boulevard for 70 days; drivers should use detours via Fargo Way and O’Callaghan Drive while the project (costing $86 million) received federal and local funds.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • The Reno Fire Department is urging residents to join Community Connect, a free program that lets people share key home information so firefighters can respond faster during emergencies. The program has aided safer responses since 2020 + officials say more sign-ups may save precious time.  KRNV
