- ➤ Baby Renata (6 lbs, 7 oz) became Washoe County's first baby of 2026 when she was born at 1:50 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Renown Regional Medical Center, marking a new beginning for our community. Reno Gazette Journal
- ➤ In 1997, the Truckee River overflowed its banks on Jan. 1, flooding downtown Reno and forcing the closure of roads + Reno-Tahoe International Airport; in Sparks, floodwaters filled a former quarry that later became Sparks Marina. KRNV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reno finished 2025 with nearly two inches more water than average for the water year beginning Oct. 1 after a storm improved the snowpack past Christmas. The Truckee and Tahoe Basins are between 90 and 95 percent of median, setting up better conditions for 2026. 2NEWS

- ➤ Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine urged residents to search for unclaimed funds (including forgotten bank accounts, checks, insurance payouts, and utility deposits) before today. The state held over $1 billion in unclaimed money at the start of 2026 and aims to reconnect owners with their cash. KRNV
- ➤ U.S. safety regulators are investigating flush-mounted door handles on some electric vehicles after reports said drivers might be trapped following crashes or battery failures. Reno first responders have trained with Tesla and now carry rescue tools (including steel batons and hydraulic cutters) to force entry if needed. KRNV
